Innumerable times has the late Arie van den Hoek been asked to record his enormous experience as a pigeon expert in a book. In this book, theoretical background knowledge would go hand-in-hand with the day-to-day, actual experiences of the sport of pigeon fancying.
This request was hardly surprising. For many years he had gratified fanciers with his many expert tips in his articles for the European pigeon press. From these alone his extensive knowledge of the racing pigeon was evident. At the same time he clearly showed that the possessed a great deal of practical experience, which is of supreme importance in the loft.
Both elements thus form the base of The Big Pigeon Racing Book. On the one hand a fair amount of practicalities and on the other sufficient scientifically proven knowledge to be able to refute half-truths and mistakes.
Just leafing through The Big Pigeon Racing Book will show you that here a well nigh complete survey is given of the hobby which in Belgium and Holland alone has many hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic adherents. Some conspicuous examples confirm this: homing faculty, bad races, doping, genetics, composition of breeding pairs, anatomy of the pigeon, diseases and treatment, feeds and housing.
Van den Hoek is not the only person responsible for these and many other subjects. From the beginning a second pigeon expert has played a major role in designing and implementing this book: Professor Dr. G. van Grembergen, scientist and practical pigeon fancier. He occupied himself with those subjects in which he has gained fame far from Belgium: genetics, health, disease and physiological factors such as digestion and egg laying. His Dutch colleague concentrated on such subjects as feeds housing, racing and breeding.
However, the cooperation between these two prominent and expert fanciers went further than that. They supplemented each other’s texts, so that The Big Pigeon Racing Book gives a diverse picture of past and present fortunes of the pigeon.
While writing this book, Arie van den Hoek died. He had appointed a successor in Jan Hermans, who provided the final textual supplements faithfully following the spirit of his illustrious predecessor. In addition he was responsible for such important components as the illustrations legends and so on. Finally, Mrs. van den Hoek-van Straalen perused the final version with a critical eye, before giving permission to publish.
The book’s developmental history is not only given to honor the founder of The Big Pigeon Racing Book, it is also hoped to make clear to the reader with how much care this treasure of data has been collected. This treasure will not only be of help to the veteran fancier, but also to someone who has just started to keep pigeons and everybody in general who takes an interest in the achievements of racing pigeons.
They will find answers for many questions. The judgment of the authors is faithfully based on truth and did not permit offering answers to each and every problem. This small facet of nature does not surrender all its secrets, even if it can be studied at such close range. For this reason the phenomenon of the racing pigeon will never cease to fascinate. This
book was born from this fascination and hopefully will only serve to increase the enthusiasm of its readers still further.
