Japanese Long-Tailed Fowl: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Japanese Long-Tailed Fowl: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857363142)

The long-tailed fowl is so named because its tail continues to grow to great lengths, thus making the species and associated breeds quite unique. The tail of fine species may reach up to 30 feet. In Britain and North America there are the Yokohamas and Phoenix, which originated from the same source as the Japanese Long-tailed Fowl. This book examines the history of these unique breeds and examines the ways for achieving the appropriate results in tail size. A "must" for anyone interested in poultry, especially the unusual and rare breeds.

The Sebright Bantam: SIGNED by Joseph Batty (Author)
The Sebright Bantam: SIGNED by Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361698)

This is a one of a kind Special book Signed by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) and Dedicated to Silvio Mattacchione who published and distributed books for Dr. Joseph Batty.

The Sebright Bantam is quite unique for many reasons:

Created specifically around 200 years ago by Sir John Sebright, who was fascinated by animal breeding.  The hen feathering and delicate lacing, characteristics of the breed, provide unusual plumage, not seen on any other bantam, except possibly Poland's, which are quite different in other ways.  The carriage, general demeanor, the strutting walk and the jaunty wings, provide a combination of features which, together, give symmetry and beauty.  Diminutive size which brings it into the category of one of the smallest bantams.  The female is around 18 oz. and the male 22 oz.  (510 to 620 g).  In the USA, they tend to be slightly larger.  The Japanese at minimum weights may be slightly smaller, but the others, all still quite small, are heavier;  eg. Pekin and Old English Game.  The heavy breeds, such as Indian Game, Wyandotte and Tuzos can be twice as heavy.  The head should be of a good size, topped by an extraordinary Rose comb, containing elaborate workings and finished off with a point at the back, known as a leader.

In this book the standards are discussed in detail, each specific requirement being stated and explained. There are many illustrations to show the good and bad points of specific illustrations of birds. The shows held by the original Sebright club almost 200 years ago must make the breed one of the first exhibition birds; the start of show in an organized way was around 1850.

This breed was to endure the many social changes and today remains a firm favorite for those who wish to keep a diminutive bantam with no equivalent in large fowl.

Childhood in Edwardian Sussex The making of a Naturalist: by Margaret Hutchinson (Author)
Childhood in Edwardian Sussex The making of a Naturalist: by Margaret Hutchinson (Author) (9780946474134)

Her parents, Hebert and Elizabeth Hutchinson brought them up in a very old farmhouse on the top of Marley Heights 700 feet above sea level.  They enjoyed a complete countrified life.  There was no gas or electricity and climbing up to bed with a guttering candle is one of the author's early memories - yet they had  two deliveries of post daily, while tradesmen could be relied upon to call for orders and to deliver the goods quickly.

In their somewhat frugal life the garden, farm, woods and meadows were an unfailing attraction and cost nothing; the children were never bored.  they careered along the lanes in their donkey cart and roamed far and wide.  With cows, pigs and chickens, they were self supporting to a large degree, plus the back breaking summer chore of whortleberry ('urts') picking.

The book is illustrated thought, not only with photographs taken by "Aunt Kitty" but with delightful recollection of the immediate family, and of uncles, aunts and cousins, and above all Miss Hutchinson's distinguished grandfather, the surgeon, Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, who founded the well known Haslemere Educational Museum.

Ferreting and Trapping for Amateur Gamekeepers: by Guy N. Smith (Author)
Ferreting and Trapping for Amateur Gamekeepers: by Guy N. Smith (Author) (9780947647476)

Ferrets are the animals of the Gamekeeper whether he is a full time professional or a part time amateur.  They are trained to hunt, keeping down vermin and maintaining a balance within the countryside.  Anyone who rears pheasants or other livestock can confirm that with out firm controls, rates and other scavengers can very quickly multiple until they over run that part of the countryside.

All the essentials are explained: feeding and management, netting, rules of safety and the best methods to employ.  the aim is to give a practical guide to an essentially do it yourself hobby.

The trapping section covers the techniques and traps employed, explaining how the latter, can be utilized to the best possible extent.  Modern methods, such as the use of gas are also examined, making the book as comprehensive as possible.

Throughout the text there are photographs of ferrets, ferreting situations and other scenes.  The whole is augmented by detailed drawings of birds and animals of the countryside.

Great Horses of Britain 1st Edition HARDCOVER: by Lee Weatherley (Author)
Great Horses of Britain 1st Edition HARDCOVER: by Lee Weatherley (Author) (9780904558340)
in the 1920's there were over two million heavy horses in Britain, but by the late 1950's they had dwindled to hardly more than two thousand.  in fact many people thought they had died out altogether.  Today, the heavy horses are on the increase again and through the figures remain in the low thousands, the signs continue hopeful.

The disappearance of the Great Horses of Britain was one of several misconceptions which many people held.  A lot of people still equate the term with Shire horses, when in fact there are four heavy horse breeds.  Some people think them an ancient breed that ran wild in our forests and startled the early invaders from the mainland with their size and strength.  This was never the case.  The Great Horses appeared comparatively late in this island and are a tribute to  our skill as breeders, rather than as products of our native soil.

The Great horse itself does at least deserve its descriptive title.  Its is a very big animal, sometimes six feet high as the withers and weighing over a ton.  It is immensely strong and yet as gentle as a lamb.  It is not surprising that myths have grown up around it, many persisting to the day.

In this book the author has taken nothing for granted early reports have been re-examined and compared; original  sources have been consulted wherever possible.  He has also talked to breeders and users in many different parts of the country.  The modern management of heavy horses is also covered.

The result is a presentation of the Great Horse in terms of its real and sometimes unexpected history as well as its place in the modern world.  It covers its breeding, feeding, health and welfare and the range of services it offered and still offers to man.  It deals with the Show Horse, bred in a strict ideal or standard of points, the Work Horse and the skill required of man in this ago old partnership and it examines the real story of the Ware house

This book does not offer an open door to immediate success in the sport, but is more an attempt to prevent the reader from making mistakes which could prove costly.

Experience of the 100 years of the sport’s history has shown that in the management of pigeons some things are unquestionably right and others are just as wrong. On these matters good pigeon fanciers throughout the world are agreed. On other matters, how ever, there is far less agreement and in many cases no agreement at all. In this book will be found advice based on the general practice of successful pigeon racers and where these disagree among themselves, then that also will be noted. It is a book of experience, not only the limited experience of the author but the experience of people with whom the author has come into con-tact in his day by day work on The Racing Pigeon, a weekly paper read throughout the world. This experience has been analysed carefully, and some attempt has been made at deciding whether
certain fanciers win because of the methods they adopt or in spite of them!

It is impossible in a book of this length to deal with every topic. As long as there are pigeon fanciers so there will be fresh things to discuss and ten books could not cover all that could be written. Here in this book will be found the essential facts that a newcomer to the sport will need to know if he is not to be disappointed in his attempts to race pigeons.

0706361970 Pigeon Racing: by Wilson Stephens
Pigeon Racing: by Wilson Stephens (Author) ( 9780706361971)

Very RARE and hard to find book!  This is a first edition of this book!

Pigeon Racing is a nationwide sport with no fewer than a quarter of a million participants. Yet it makes little impact on the rest of the community. Everyone knows of it, little is known about it. This book reveals the reasons for the compulsive attractiveness for those competitors taking part, for their total commitment, and the rewards, which can run to the riches for those who succeed.

There are chapters on the way the sport has developed, the racing pigeon; the loft; training; race day; breeding and feeding; how to start; the great names. These different aspects are discussed and make a complex and very technical subject comprehensible to those who have no prior Knowledge of the sport , or tits organisation.

Life of the Pigeon: by Alexander F. Skutch (Author) & Dana Garner (Illustrator) (9780801425288 )

"Skutch combines his personal knowledge of pigeons that he has watched near his Costa Rican home with a masterful summary of the published literature on Columbids of the world.  The doves and pigeons of the world are a fascinating lot. Alexander Skutch, aided by Dana Gardner, captures the essence of their life and presents it in an easily digestible form. Although scientists may be exasperated by some of the elements of the presentation, any student of birds will be enlightened and entertained by reading Life of the Pigeon." -- Ornithological Literature

About the Author:

Alexander Skutch was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He received a Doctorate in Botany from Johns Hopkins University. He then found employment with United Fruit Company, which had a problem with banana diseases, for which it needed the expertise of a botanist.

After an initial stay in Jamaica, Skutch traveled to Guatemala, Panama and Honduras. During this time he fell in love with the tropics and also acquired a deep interest in birds. He began studying their habits.

Skutch collected plants for museums to make money, but observing birds remained his life’s main focus. In 1941 he purchased a farm in Costa Rica, where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1950, Skutch married Pamela Lancaster, who was also a naturalist.

One of the writers of his obituary said: "A lifelong vegetarian, Skutch grew corn, yucca and other crops, and, without running water until the 1990s, bathed and drank from the nearest stream. He believed in "treading lightly on the mother Earth". With his wife Pamela, daughter of the English naturalist Sir Ray Lankester, whom he married in 1950, and their adopted son Edwin, he stayed there for the rest of his life."

Skutch wrote over 40 books and over 200 papers on ornithology, preferring a descriptive style and eschewing statistics and even banding.

Alexander Skutch died one week before his 100th birthday, in the same year he received the Loye and Alden Miller Research Award. He is universally regarded as one of the world's greatest ornithologists.
