Description
The puzzling question as to why European breeders are successful in raising young while Australian breeders seem to have difficulties needs investigation along with the scientific aspect of why this species, the Swift Parakeet, is now endangered in the wild.
While planning the research for this book, it soon became apparent that a trip to Tasmania during the breeding season of the Swift Parakeet was necessary. To complete the scientific research, an avicultural research program was undertaken to obtain details from breeders of Swift Parakeets among the members of various societies, including The Parrot Society (UK); Parkieten Societeit (Holland), and Club des Oiseaux Exotique (France). Similar research was conducted in other countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greenland, Switzerland, and the USA. A total of 72 questionnaires with information on housing, feeding, and breeding Swift Parakeets were returned. While this is only a small number of the breeders worldwide, it certainly illustrates how much interest there is in this colorful parakeet.
This book is the culmination of a great deal of effort provided by many people around the world who have willingly contributed and who are deeply concerned about the survival of this beautiful parakeet in the wild and in aviculture
