He was responsible for paving the way to establishing the present-day poultry standards, ensuring that judging was done on a fair basis, and making known to the world, the breeds of poultry that came from many lands.

His Illustrated Book of Poultry became the famous poultry book of all time and now sells for a very large price. In particular, the color plates by J W Ludlow, painted with an eye to detail, still serve as a guide to the requirements for many breeds, especially the old and rare.

In this work, the 80 plates are reproduced in full size, as well as giving a summary of the breeds covered by Lewis Wright.
