About the Author: from Quote on back cover
Roger Sweeney has spent several years at various zoological and bird gardens in the United Kingdom. In 1989 he became Livestock Manager at "Birdworld", the United Kingdom's largest bird gardens. While at Birdworld success was achieved with a wide diversity of species, including Parrots, Softbills, Pheasants, Ratites, Penguins, Spoonbills, Wading birds and Birds of Prey. The Eclectus Parrot has been bred at Birdworld consistently over the last 10 years and considerable work has been carried out into its incubation and neo-natal care. In 1993 Roger became a full time consultant at "Birds International", one of the world's largest breeding and research centers located in the Philippines. This facility houses what is surely the world's largest collection of captive Eclectus Parrots! While at "Birds International" Roger was also responsible for the management of some of the world's rarest birds including the Spix Macaw, Mount Apo Lorikeet, Sumba Hornbill and Palm Cockatoo. As of mid 1994 Riger has been retained as a consultant to "Loro Parque".
We are all familiar with this spotted dog once so useful as a carriage dog. Today the breed remains popular and has many followers in both the show world and as a general house dog. This book is well-illustrated with top class winners including the Supreme Champion at Crufts.
Although the precise origins of the Dalmatian are obscure, there is no doubt that it has a long history dating back to the sixteenth Century or earlier. The author covers this history as well as modern-day management.
In the nineteenth century they accompanied the carriages of the gentry and became known as the Coach Dogs. They are agile, loyal and affectionate dogs who fit in well to the family environment. Since the first edition the breed has won Best in Show at Crufts which obviously raises its prestige as a show dog. Mrs. E.J. Woddyatt was the owner of the dog CH Fanhill Faune. Moreover, recently Kennel Club registrations have exceeded 900.
Many photographs supplement the text and in characteristic manner Mr. Clifford L.B. Hubbard has researched the background of the breed. The book can be recommended to all who are interested in the Dalmatian.

Not for many years has there been a completely up-to-date treatise on Toy Dogs as a whole. Many individual breeds have been covered, but no author has felt able to show them all together and also to consider the books and other literature relating to the multitude of breeds. This book sets out to give a comprehensive coverage of all the breeds from early development to the present time. It should serve as a handbook for those who wish to know more about their particular breed as well as an up-to-date account of the modern dogs. It also includes a bibliography of specialized titles.
This book is illustrated through out with dogs from different countries. In addition, for those who wish to study specific aspects of a breed there is quite detailed coverage, a fact which makes the book an indispensable work of reference.

About the Author

Peter Andrew O'Connor (Born in London 1933) was introduced to taxidermy as a boy scout at Jarrow-upon-Tyne, later becoming a commercial taxidermist at Luton, Bedfordshire, in 1964, and then expanding into European taxidermy. In 1970 he moved into research taxidermy on the freeze drying techniques created by Reg Harris. He was the first successful taxidermist to do so, and developed these freeze drying techniques to a commercial level. Eventually he developed a new field to taxidermy called Combined Taxidermy.
He has been the Chairman of the Taxidermists Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, since its inception in 1973. His work appears in over seventy museums in the British Isles alone, besides appearing as far afield as Japan, Australia and the West Coast of the USA, and covers all forms of taxidermy work. Mr. O'Connor is a teacher and lecturer of taxidermy, and has written many papers on the subject, including a book called Fish Taxidermy. Goats have always had a strong body of followers; simply because they are useful, practical animals. With the growing desire of many people to be a self-sufficient as possible it is natural that they consider the possibility of ground keeping. A goat is smaller than a cow and accordingly, eats less food and requires relatively simple accommodations and equipment.
Joan Shields the author has been breeding and managing goats for many years. She is a top level judge and is acknowledged authority on goats.

Poultry have been domesticated for thousands of years. In Britain at the time of the Roman occupation, there were three named breeds - Dorking, Old English Game and possibly the Scots Dumpies. In addition, related to the Dorking were the Old Kent Fowl and the Surrey Fowl which later together became the Sussex Fowl. Although the latter in one form or other existed for many years, it was not until the early part of the 20th century that it became standardized. This came about because Sir Edward Brown at a lecture pointed out to the Sussex farmers that there was no standard breed recognized by the Poultry Club.
Despite the late start, the Sussex went on to become regards as the most useful of poultry and grew in large numbers possibly excelling all other breeds. The Dorking, regarded at one time as the best table fowl in the land sadly has declined in numbers and in usefulness, although still has a active breed club.
This book traces the history of the breeds, examines the heyday of the Sussex poultry fattening industry which supplied the London markets with chickens that satisfied the most discerning palates, and explains the nature of the breeds and varieties. There are illustrations throughout to show the types of birds that have been winning at shows as well as guidance on the correct colors. Includes index and a listing of Sussex and Dorking fowl breeding clubs in Great Britain.
With the swing back of free range, the possibility of utilizing the breeds on a commercial basis is also examined. However due emphasis is given to those who wish to keep these fascinating breeds on a small scale and for showing with bantams or large fowl.

Pekin Bantams are small bantams with feathered legs, profuse plumage, and a friendly nature that makes them easy to keep and breed. Because of their excellent temperament, the breed is manageable for children (properly supervised), the elderly and disabled. This book sets out to explain their early history and discusses many of the personalities involved, past and present.
All facets of the breed are covered including selection, housing, breeding, brooding, feeding, common ailments, though stressing that the birds are hardy, and their management generally. The author specialized in the Lavender variety, but keeps other colors and she has also drawn on the wide experiences of others who have been in the Fancy for very many years. On the show scene she has been awarded many prizes, including the best in a color (Lavender) at the national shows.
The book is well illustrated with photographs of prize winning birds and essential equipment for keeping the birds. There is also a color section showing the principal colors available. Written for a wide audience as possible it should meet the needs of all who are interested in this diminutive breed of poultry.

Bantams have been known for hundreds of years, but, have lived in the shadow of large poultry. Gradually, though, they have grown in numbers had have now a larger following then their larger brothers and sisters. the reasons are not difficult to understand; being smaller, they eat less food, are easier to transport to shows, make ideal pets for children and can become quite tame.
This modern book presents popular breeds, rare breeds, some that are extinct, and some that are in some countries, but not in the UK. The breeds are arranged in alphabetical order, are described, and are illustrated, in black and white and in color.

This book traces the development of incubation methods; it also explains the necessary requirements for achieving maximum results. Combination the essential factors can be done only with an understanding on how an embryo develops and grow and this is all explained in concise and simple terms. No previous knowledge is assumed, but the full range of possible scales is covered for the fancier who wishes to hatch, say, 50 eggs to the poultry farmer who wishes to hatch thousands. Where large incubators are to be obtained there is a guidance given on capital expenditure decisions and the procedures followed. Also eggs from a wide range of birds are featured from bantams to ostriches. Points of difficulty are examined in relation to particular eggs.
The methods used for successful rearing are explained and there are many illustrations of equipment which may be used. There are 16 plates in full color showing the stages of development and some of the species/breeds which may be hatched. It can be recommenced to poultry fanciers or to students who must have a grounding in the practical applications of incubation methods and embryology.
