Poultry Keeping has developed tremendously over the last 50 years or more only to find that the advanced methods being used were reaching the point where the health of the birds was deteriorating and their produce was suspect; salmonella and other dangers became apparent. There has now been an examination of methods used and the philosophy behind them. As a result alternative systems have been developed and more rational approaches are now possible.
This is a practical book which should appeal to agricultural students, poultry farms and others who are concerned with efficiency; but, who also wish to have an appreciation of the welfare aspects related to this important industry

This book traces the development of incubation methods; it also explains the necessary requirements for achieving maximum results. Combination the essential factors can be done only with an understanding on how an embryo develops and grow and this is all explained in concise and simple terms. No previous knowledge is assumed, but the full range of possible scales is covered for the fancier who wishes to hatch, say, 50 eggs to the poultry farmer who wishes to hatch thousands. Where large incubators are to be obtained there is a guidance given on capital expenditure decisions and the procedures followed. Also eggs from a wide range of birds are featured from bantams to ostriches. Points of difficulty are examined in relation to particular eggs.
The methods used for successful rearing are explained and there are many illustrations of equipment which may be used. There are 16 plates in full color showing the stages of development and some of the species/breeds which may be hatched. It can be recommenced to poultry fanciers or to students who must have a grounding in the practical applications of incubation methods and embryology.
In this edition a special color plate section has been specially prepared form photographs by different people. Where still in copyright acknowledgement has been given.

Aratingas belong to the group of South American parrots. Together with the Macaws and the Amazons they are the best known parrot likes from this region. They are familiar to every birdkeeper, albeit in varying degrees, yet until know no easy reference book about this genus had appeared on the market.
The author has successfully attempted to satisfy this need; he has chosen for the same layout as in his previous book "Australian Parakeets and their Mutations", a publication which has been received with extreme enthusiasm by aviculturists.
"Aratingas" therefore, also contains high quality photographs of all the species and most of the sub-species, which once again have virtually all been taken by Cees Scholtz.
The photographs accompany practical and clear description in which all the important characteristics of each species are given: sub-species, origin of name, parents and you, sizes and weights, habitat and habits, diet, nesting sites, breeding process, general remarks and mutations.

This book combines an identification guide to the birds "which breed in Europe, plus those which visit as non-breeders in reasonable numbers," with an introductory ornithology text. The 429 taxonomically arranged species accounts in the guide section include English and Latin names, terse description, range map, and one or more small but clear color paintings; for most species, all major plumage variations are depicted.
The text sections simply and clearly describe the anatomy, physiology, classification, behavior, ecology, and conservation of birds. At least six other English-language field guides to European birds are currently available; the extensive treatment of avian biology is this work's special asset

This is the most comprehensive coverage of the parrot family n captivity to have appeared in any language. In recent years there has been a necessary shift of emphasis amount aviculturist, who, since importations have been severely restricted, now concentrate their efforts on breeding from their birds.
This book therefore deals very thoroughly with this aspect and includes the experiences of breeders throughout the world, many of them previously unpublished.
Parrots are especially interesting as aviary subjects, certain species breed so readily that there are more of them in captivity than in their often shrinking natural habitat; others, however, are extremely difficult to rear under captive conditions.
AS pets, parrots have been popular for centuries for their intelligence, affectionate nature, engaging personalities and their ability to mimic. The parrot owner who is interested primarily in this aspect will find information on individual species' characteristics throughout the book.
Ninety full colour photographs illustrate widely varying species of parrot and include some extremely rare specimens.
