The Sussex & Dorking Fowls: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
The Sussex & Dorking Fowls: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361667)

Poultry have been domesticated for thousands of years. In Britain at the time of the Roman occupation, there were three named breeds - Dorking, Old English Game and possibly the Scots Dumpies. In addition, related to the Dorking were the Old Kent Fowl and the Surrey Fowl which later together became the Sussex Fowl. Although the latter in one form or other existed for many years, it was not until the early part of the 20th century that it became standardized. This came about because Sir Edward Brown at a lecture pointed out to the Sussex farmers that there was no standard breed recognized by the Poultry Club.

Despite the late start, the Sussex went on to become regards as the most useful of poultry and grew in large numbers possibly excelling all other breeds. The Dorking, regarded at one time as the best table fowl in the land sadly has declined in numbers and in usefulness, although still has a active breed club.

This book traces the history of the breeds, examines the heyday of the Sussex poultry fattening industry which supplied the London markets with chickens that satisfied the most discerning palates, and explains the nature of the breeds and varieties. There are illustrations throughout to show the types of birds that have been winning at shows as well as guidance on the correct colors. Includes index and a listing of Sussex and Dorking fowl breeding clubs in Great Britain.

With the swing back of free range, the possibility of utilizing the breeds on a commercial basis is also examined. However due emphasis is given to those who wish to keep these fascinating breeds on a small scale and for showing with bantams or large fowl.

Poultry Characteristics Tails: Signed by Joseph Batty
Poultry Characteristics Tails: by Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361773)

The domesticated fowl has developed from the Jungle Fowl and has gradually evolved over many generations. the most significant changes tool place after 1850 , due primarily to the discovery of a number of new breeds, notably the Brahmas, Cochin and Langshans, and secondly, to the so-called "Hen Fever" that started around that time. This was the heyday of the poultry shows when all levels of society were stimulated to take part in producing standard breeds of fowl for the many shows that were organized.

The earlier birds had the conventional Jungle Fowl tail or the whip tail of the Malays and similar Asian fowl. With the introduction of the new breeds, brought about by crossing with the three breeds mentioned, a multitude of newly formed characteristics emerged. The Brahmas and Cochins introduced a larger size and heavily feathered birds. On the tail there were introduced the "cushion" and the soft, mounded collection of feathers; the tall, hard sickle feathers were no longer apparent. This applied to Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Jersey Giants and many others. the diversity was enormous and all had to be set down in the standard descriptions.

Bantams and Small Poultry: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Bantams and Small Poultry: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361742)

Bantams have been known for hundreds of years, but, have lived in the shadow of large poultry.  Gradually, though, they have grown in numbers had have now a larger following then their larger brothers and sisters.  the reasons are not difficult to understand; being smaller, they eat less food, are easier to transport to shows, make ideal pets for children and can become quite tame.

This modern book presents popular breeds, rare breeds, some that are extinct, and some that are in some countries, but not in the UK. The breeds are arranged in alphabetical order, are described, and are illustrated, in black and white and in color.

The Silkie Fowl by Dr. Joseph Batty
The Silkie Fowl: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361940)

The Silkie fowl is one of the marvels of the Poultry world. Instead of having feathers it is covered in a woolly or silky type of feather; moreover, its legs have feathers down one side, the face is mulberry color, and to top if all off, it possesses a crest and in some cases a beard.  This book traces the history of the breed, which is very ancient, and shows how it has changed over the last 100 years. It also covers the management of the breed and shows how it can be utilized as a broody hen for which it is famed.

Photographs, illustrations, and special silhouettes, all show the nature of this interesting breed of poultry, which incidentally is a good layer. This book covers the history, standard requirements, colors available, management and cult of the Silkie.

Concise Poultry Colour Guide: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Concise Poultry Colour Guide: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857362107)

Originally published as a picture guide to the various breeds of poultry and their colors it was first produced for the Centenary of the Poultry Club in 1977. At the time it was stated by a number of writers that this was the first exhaustive treatise on color to appear since Victorian times.  This new, revised edition although of a smaller format, has a much larger number of pages and contains much more information on color. With more knowledge on genetics the inheritance of color is better understood, but still the experienced fancier is the one who is able to produce and improve the complex and varied patterns found in many breeds.

Color Illustrations are provided for the standard breeds of poultry, including large fowl, bantams, domesticated ducks, geese, and turkeys, which are based on paintings by the Hampshire artist, Charles Francis. Each breed is described in brief terms. Information is also included concerning the evolution and origins of poultry, color patterns, and breeding as well as a glossary of terms. This new fifth edition contains additional b&w illustrations to show the points of a fowl.

Besides the colored plates which cover 48 pairs of birds of different varieties, there are monochrome illustrations which show the shape and type of the different breeds. The Book also provides information on a great many aspects of color and should be invaluable to all who wish to understand the  many breeds now in existence, both large fowl and bantams.

Poultry Colour Guide: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Poultry Colour Guide: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857362541)

First published in 1977 to mark the Centenary of the Poultry Club it has gone on being read for almost a quarter of a century . It has also been published in an A5 version, covering large and bantams, but not ducks , geese , turkeys and guinea fowl. This was to give more information on the development of colors of different breeds.

Following many requests for the return of the large format which covers large  fowl, bantams, ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowl, the publishers have decided to reissue it, with a few modifications. Most of the breeds still exist in their form as a the first edition, so not a log change was needed however there is a now generation of poultry keepers and it is to them that the book should appeal.  We were fortunate in being able to co-operate with Charles Francis in placing on record the breeds and varieties of poultry , large fowl, bantams, ducks, geese and guinea fowl. His task required skill and patience in painting the birds under our guidance.  We believe this is the first attempt to illustrate the full range of domesticated poultry in their full beauty.

Poultry-keeping is a fascinating hobby. Yet many people are not even aware of its possibilities. Fewer still even appreciate the multitude of colors which are available. This book is intended for those who wish to know more of these practical , beautiful birds. It is a guide for the poultry fancier who has for as long required a work of reference.

Poultry Show & Showing by Dr. Joseph Batty
Poultry Shows & Showing: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361889)

Shows have been functioning since the 1840's and they encouraged the development of new breeds and the establishment of standards in Britain, the USA and other countries.  They provide an excellent stage on which the skill and devotion of breeders can be seen and rewarded.  In addition, there is the encouragement of a rather special hobby, which is fascinating as well as useful - even bantams produce eggs for the table, thus paying for their keep.

There is a now a background against which advice can be given.  Matters such as breeding, the type of stock, the requirements for utility or exhibition, preparing the birds, training them, spotting the faults and other relevant aspects are all covered.  The author has made a special study of the key features for individual breeds and gives these with appropriate explanations.

Chapters include: History of the shows; Development of the breeds; The main requirements; The TYPE; Poultry combs; Tails; Legs; Other features; Likely defects; Show preparation; Judging of poultry.

Poultry Characteristics Tails: Signed by Joseph Batty
Poultry Characteristics Tails: Signed by Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361773)

This is a one of a kind Special book Signed by Dr. Joseph Batty and Dedicated to Silvio Mattacchione who published and distributed books for Dr. Joseph Batty.

A Snuffle of Pekes (A Tao of Pekingese): by Valerie Miles (Author) and Norma Procter
A Snuffle of Pekes (A Tao of Pekingese): by Valerie Miles (Author) & Norma Procter (Author) (9781857360097)

Rumer Godden, in her history of the Pekingese dog, quotes from the legend of the lion who fell in love with a butterfly, telling us the result of this mating were the Pekingese dogs, who 'ever afterwards have to be as brave as lions and as dainty as butterflies'.

In this book, dedicated to Rumer Godden, Valerie Miles and Norma Procter have captured in line, color and verse, a living history of a Snuffle of Pekes, who, perhaps, represent the characteristics of their breed. Through the pages of this book you will meet several of the delightful Pekingese who populate these little stories, in text and in wonderful drawings by the authors!

Note:  At the top of the book is a small water mark which the picture does not depict.
